I recently combed through years of scratch paper and coffee shop napkins to piece together lyrics of songs that I had written. I was surprised to find 99 completed songs with melody and lyrics. About half of them have yet to be satisfactorily recorded, so I'm doing that now. I'm also working on that elusive 100th song. It hasn't made it over the writer's block wall just yet.
When Beethoven's works were compiled, it was found that many of his early pieces were just as rich and complex as his later works. This was no doubt a credit to his sheer genius. Unfortunately, I don't have that problem with my songs. My early works are more immature and simpler than songs I write today. This is especially true of the lyrics.
There are many parallels between songwriting, music video, and film. There is the process of writing, recording, and seeing the production to completion There is also a creative high as situations arise and new paths are taken along the way. There is the tedious attention to detail which is often more difficult than anything else, but most rewarding in the end.
