Strange man living in the street
Searching through the garbage for something to eat
Bad clothes and the pain shows
At home in the darkness
Where nobody goes
Choking down some cheap port wine
The reason that he asks you for a dime

She lies in her room
Feeling no pain for now
In an hour or two, she’ll wake
To another drink or again to shake
What can I do but watch
She’s like a stray dog on the freeway I see
From the safety of my car
If she doesn’t get off, she won’t get far
Chorus:
Honey, there’s love for you
But you’ve got to let it in
What are you running from?
A past that you can’t forget
Abuse that no child should take
A nightmare from which you just can’t wake
Chorus
Every hour of the day or night
They gather together unknown
To share each other’s pain
But in the end, they have to face it alone
Chorus

She was sitting on an old fallen oak tree
Watching the water as it rolled and rippled over the shallows
And her chin was resting on her knee beneath the gaze of her peaceful eyes
I approached her from the path leaving behind
The whole torrent of my life gone now for a moment
And I climbed beside her to a branch that seemed to grow from her peaceful core
She turned toward me with a strong look of surprise
And I didn’t understand until she started signing
And I watched in wonder as her graceful silence grew
Just like the fallen tree
Chorus:
And I could almost hear the voice inside her moving through the trees
I swear that I could feel the voice inside her moving inside of me
Natures sounds surrounded us like a symphony she couldn’t hear
We watched in silence for awhile, breathing it in
I sensed a sadness in her that I have felt many times
And when she held my hand, I watched it drift on down the stream
Until it disappeared
Chorus

One night, I was crossing the street
Under a Memphissky
A car pulled up, I said, “Hello”
He said, “Goodbye”
And then he killed me
I don’t know why
But he fired the gun and so
I had to die
Chorus:
Yeah, he / she killed me
Now, I’m in the ground
So if you’re wondering
That’s why I never come ‘round
I’ll be waiting on down the line
He’ll get his and I’ll get mine
Yeah, on down the line
I could never leave you behind
One day, I was driving my car
Going to the store
Meanwhile on the other side of town
He was saying, “Give me just one more,”
Then, he killed me
I don’t know why
But he had to drink and so
I had to die
Chorus
I knew a girl I thought I could trust
She liked to have her fun
But she caught the silent death
From someone else’s gun
Then she killed me
I don’t know why
But she had to love and so
I had to die
Chorus

In the classroom, she plays “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”
And all the kids sing along in perfect harmony
And when she asks them “Just what do you want to be?”
They melt
When I was just a boy, my country said to me
“Pick up that bayonet boy and follow me…down”
Well he led me past the rice fields and through the rain
And when I got hit, he said “Don’t think about the pain”
Back in the classroom, she plays “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”
And all the kids will sing along until…
They melt

The earth is crying
Because she’s in the hands of fools
And they’re playing a game with her
But they don’t know the rules
We are all responsible
There’s nowhere to run and hide
We can get up now and take the reins
Or just go along for the ride
because…
Chorus:
This country’s not an eagle
It’s a horse with blinders on
And it pulls us along
A road of victims that it walks upon
Polititions are leaders
Who follow right behind
The common folk who sweep the streets
Sweep the streets for mines
And when the deed is done
Armed with an alibi
They hide the truth beneath the bed
Where we’ve got to lie
Chorus
Wolves are on the prowl
They’re running with the pack
In the schools and on the streets
You’ve got to watch your back
And looks cannot define
The character within
There’s no sound, smell, taste
Or color of sin
Chorus

It was time to lose our innocence
It was 1939
And we flew our Stukas proudly
Over the mighty Rhine
We dropped our precious cargo
To reclaim our right
We understood the reasons
We thought, that we should fight
Chorus:
But now I’m not so sure
There’s not a better way
Now, I’m not so sure
I’ll ever see an end to this dark day
Well, we walked right in at Inchon
They were standing in a row
We knew what we were there for
Had to stop the domino
When they pinned us down at Chosin
And Chesty walked the line
My will was never broken
And they got us out in time
Chorus
Now, the young still follow blindly
And it isn’t hard to see
The forces that control the game
Belong to you and me
But, we let them be our masters
Beat us at our own game
And we find ourselves upon a wall
With nothing but a name
Chorus:
And now I know for sure
There is a better way
But now I’m just as sure
I’ll never see an end to this dark day

It doesn’t matter what I think
What we ought to do
I’m going to have another drink
And go back to my room
She was just another woman
It was just another night
If I try to think about it
It almost makes it right
Chorus:
Then she threw me over
Threw me over
Over the edge again
Yeah, she threw me over
Threw me over
Over the edge again
It doesn’t matter what I do
In the light of day
Just as long as I’m with you
Where I want to stay
She was just another woman
It was just another night
Every time I think about it
It always feels so right
Something’s happening to me
Deep inside my soul
I don’t want to be set free
I want to lose control
She was just another woman
It was just another night
Every time I think about it
It always feels so right
Chorus

Tanks roll over the feet of the future
As it stands on the battlefield
Deaf to the voices of history
Listen to the bombs, and the secret’s revealed
As they fall, so do the people
One and all as history repeats
Because the trumpets of just one victory
Can drown the drums of a thousand defeats
It takes just one to write the book
And everyone to learn it
It took millions to build this world
And it only takes one to burn it
As the hawk who wants to be elected
Will shake hands with anyone he meets
He knows the trumpets from just one victory
Drown the muffled drums of a thousand defeats
You know that there will always be
People living young and old
Who love to see blood running free
Until it’s forced from there own hearts cold
As it flows, so do the people
Like a river running through the street
Because the trumpets from just one victory
Can drown the drums of a thousand defeats
If the love of a girl cannot silence the guns
Next to the shadow of the wind we will lie
If the eyes of a child cannot answer the drums
Then there’s little hope for us than to lay down and die

Flames rise high into the night
Reaching out is the burning hand
Of the dying man
Beyond the pain, he can hear
The strangled cries from the mortal dawn that we are on
The undertaker’s wind
Blows as it burns
But there will be a time
When it returns
To the scenes of our crimes
Against nature, against ourselves
The time it tells
She has no malice or deceit
Follows only where her heart leads
Until it bleeds
But there will come a time
When we will meet
The undertaker’s wind
Swirls at our feet
Oh, prove to me that you believe
And I will open the gate
An undoomed man whose courage is good
Is often saved by fate
Every dog will have his day
To walk the burning road into the light
Into the fight
Every second of our way
Brings us closer to the death we find
It’s close behind
The undertaker’s wind
Cuts like a knife
We breathe it in
It gives us life
Oh, prove to me that you believe
And I will open the gate
I wish it was that easy
I wish it was that easy

The last time I saw you
The last time I saw you
You were walking away, walking away
It’s been a long time, but this time there’s nothing you can do
So close your eyes and no one can see you
Drift away, drift away
Chorus:
They’ll forget your past, forget your name
When you’re gone, someone else can take the blame
Or you can blame it on the darkness
You can blame it on the day
You thought your dreams were shot down
But they got up and walked away
It ain’t easy, it ain’t easy to see
You’ve got no money, and nothing’s free
And it’s a hard road
But it seems like nothing good ever comes down here anymore
When they see you coming, do they bolt the door
And you keep walking like nothing even matters
Chorus
The last time I saw you, the last time I saw you
You were walking away, walking away
But it’s all over, it’s all over for you
The streets are talking
And this time, what they’re saying is true
They never let you in
They never let you in
Chorus

I feel I’ve known you for miles
Every wink of your smile
We are connected to the same vibration
It talks to me when you’re away
And this is what it says girl…
Chorus:
Have you no faith in sorcery or madness
Underscore the magic of the lines on my hands
They say that you will be with me
They say that you will be with me
Yeah
Last night, I woke from my bed
Shattered dreams filled my head
Then, I felt your body move beside me
With the rhythm of the night
What’s the matter girl, don’t you believe it?
Chorus
So, won’t you please take my hand
‘Cause I don’t know where we’ll land
We’ll fall together through a wall of silence
And echo off the other side
Chorus:
But, I have no faith in sorcery or madness
Only in the magic of the lines on your hand
They say that you are here with me
Right now
Only that you are here with me
They say that you are here with me
Only that you are here with me

I stay all night, but still you change your mind
To make it right, why can’t I ever find the words
The words to heal, the way to make you whole, I
I cannot feel the emptiness inside my soul
Chorus:
I don’t know what you want from me anymore
I don’t know what you want from me anymore
I find my way, and like my shadow you are there
Blinding me, controlling everything I am, and I can’t see
A single sign I might have known, when I reach out
Like everyone, I am alone
Chorus
Get in my car, I turn it over and I drive
I’m breathing now, but I don’t know if I’m alive
I find our place in the sand and now I know
I know you’re gone
The time, I held it in my hand oh
It doesn’t feel like home to me anymore
It doesn’t feel like home to me anymore
Chorus

If you walk around this world long enough
You’ll find yourself asking the same old question
Over and over
Chorus:
Are you on drugs?
You must be on drugs
The other day I was in a bar
A guy tried to tell me that he had roaches of the liver
Roaches of the liver?
Chorus
Just last night I looked at myself in the mirror
Couldn’t help asking that age old question
Chorus

Two directions on the line
I’m thinking I don’t know
I get the feeling it doesn’t matter
Just which way I go
Chorus:
I’m at the crossroads signing the papers again
Just like the last time, I know it happened
But I don’t remember when
(In my bones, I hold the pen)
Out on tour now, I can travel
And I know I can’t see
Any reason for redemption, ‘cause I’m already free
Chorus
Good and bad are only words now
Written on a page
No concern though to me anyhow
When I’m up on the stage
Chorus
Am I lost now, it doesn’t matter
Just which way I go
They can’t tell me anything ‘cause
I already know
Chorus
